Fourth Fun – Safely Please
June 29, 2009California Laws Will Keep You Safe
This year, the much anticipated 4th of July holiday falls on a glorious Saturday. What a joy to have the day off to barbeque and relax with family and friends as dusk reveals those beautiful bursts of light in the sky.
However, with all the fires in California as of late, officials are cracking down on any illegal fireworks. This year, spring rains have led to an over abundance of dry grass and brush on mountains, hills, fields and road sides. One single spark from an illegal firework could ignite another monstrous blaze and ruin everyone’s joy.
Officials ask for the help of the public to make this year’s holiday an especially safe one. Be responsible and mindful of your surroundings, note the wind direction and keep children away from any recently lit items. Sparklers can be especially dangerous after they burn out; the metal is still hot enough to burn through small fingers. Sparklers, by the way, are also illegal in California.
Los Angeles Sherriff officials state that possession of any amount of illegal fireworks over the size of an M-80 explosive can be prosecuted as a felony, which is punishable by a state prison term. Furthermore, is it important to know that anyone altering or changing in any way a “Safe & Sane” branded firework can also be prosecuted. People can receive very stiff fines if caught with illegal fireworks.
It’s a sad but true fact. Illegal fireworks; those shooting guns into the air and those who celebrate our nation’s birthday by drinking and driving have hurt and killed many people in past years. Sheriff’s deputies will be out in force this year, specifically seeking those who choose to celebrate unwisely.
On the 4th of July, more deputies and officers will be assigned to city patrol and some will be patrolling areas in unmarked vehicles. So be smart, be aware and make the right choices. This year, there are several firework watching events around Los Angeles where you can go with family to watch in awe the bountiful fireworks in a safe and sane environment. Have fun, be safe and have a happy birthday, you good ol’ U.S.A!
