Governor Signs “Interlock Device” Bill To Keep Drunk Drivers Off California Roads
Written by Robin Sandoval on October 13, 2009In what will surely be known as a ground-breaking decision for California, Governor Arnold Schwarzeneggar has signed a bill that will test requiring drivers previously convicted of a DUI to install an ‘ignition interlock device’ in their cars. When a person blows into this in-car alcohol breath screening device, it will block the vehicles capacity to start should alcohol be detected on their breath.
Assemblyman Mike Feuer, a Democrat from Los Angeles wrote the bill which will expire in 2016.
The bill requires installing the ignition interlock device on any vehicle owned or operated by first-time DUI offenders in Los Angeles, Alameda, Sacramento and Tulare counties.
And, in another sweep of his pen the Governor signed a bill written by Senator Republican, Bob Huff, which allows repeat drunken drivers apply for a restricted license should they install the interlock device on their vehicles. Clearly, these are two bills that will change the way California drivers think when turning the key to “start their engines.”
