Yet Jose Antonio Medina Arreguin, aka ‘Don Pepe,’ has been alegedly able to smuggle one bear-sized shipment of heroin per month into California. Mexican narcotics officers say Arreguin’s operation netted him $144 million a year. They were finally able to arrest the kingpin’s arrest in an attempt to take out the drug market there, after a two year investigation into his dealings,

O.C’s Bill Hunt Speaks Out On Keeping Criminals in Jail

Written by Robin Sandoval-March on March 20, 2010 – 6:28 am -

In an opinion published in the Orange County Register Thursday, Bill Hunt discusses the controversial decision by Sheriff Sandra Hutchens to offer criminals early release from jail.

The decision to “cite and release” inmates from Orange County jails has led to over 400 criminals being put back onto the streets without having to post bail or provide any further court guarantees. Many of the inmates who are released this way flee. This ‘unsafe practice’ has been put into action and instituted by the court in an effort to relieve jail overcrowding. However, it is said that the overcrowding issue no longer exists, as there are 1,400 open jail beds.

As a function of the criminal justice system, Read more »

St. Patrick’s Day 2010 — L.A. DUI Checkpoints In Effect

Written by Robin Sandoval-March on March 15, 2010 – 12:37 am -

LOS ANGELES (03/15/10) – “Beware the Ides of March!” If you’re not Roman, you know what to beware of… break out your old, dusty green T-shirts, “Kiss Me I’m Irish” buttons, Shamrock earrings and good luck green socks, because St. Patrick’s Day is on it’s way - Wednesday, March 17th.

But don’t let this mid-week holiday fool you for one minute. State wide law enforcement will be in place. So if you’re caught driving under the influence of too many green beers, well, you’ll going to be arrested and charged with DUI. You’ll also be fined, lose your driving freedom and spend the night in jail. Fun, huh?

Now, I apologize for putting a damper on one of the years funnest holidays, but I want to make sure we all make it home safely – after our green day celebrations.

There will be several events in Los Angeles. Like the St. Patrick’s Day parade, the LA County Irish Fair, the Orange County Marketplace St. Patrick’s Day Festival, and the St. Patty’s Fest in Hollywood. Then again, there’s the many cool Irish pubs and Taverns peppered about town. A great time to be had by all!

But be mindful. Public drinking laws may also be enforced on the street. Don’t get caught with a brew in hand at a public parade. Most city ordinances prohibit folks from possessing open containers in public places.

During the week of St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, the Los Angeles Police Department will be conducting sobriety checkpoints around the city in an effort to keep the streets of L.A. safe. Below are some of the checkpoints Read more »

Thomas Lennon, one of 90 drug defendants that was freed last week due to a San Francisco police crime lab drug scandal, managed to avoid prosecution in three separate methamphetamine cases. But according to police, a gang task force officer, named Dan Silver of the San Francisco Police Department, was waiting just outside the court building to arrest Lennon for a separate counterfeiting case. Lennon was in the company of his attorney, Ken Quigley.

While Silver handcuffed Lennon, Quigley reached into his client’s pocket and withdrew his wallet. The officer asked for the wallet back but the defense attorney refused, even when he was threatened with arrest.

Officer Silver arrested Quigley and confiscated the wallet. Two counterfeit $50 bills, each made out of five dollar bills, were allegedly inside it. Reportedly, they still even had Lincoln’s face on them. Quigley was arrested for a misdemeanor obstruction of justice and for concealing evidence.

The attorney later said Read more »
