Santa Barbara Sheriff Wants New $80 Million Jail

Written by 888BailBond Bondsman on June 25, 2010 – 1:02 pm -

Currently, the Santa Barbara jail being used is 40 percent over it’s recommend capacity level. Luckily, the State of California, through the Assembly Bill 900, has put up $56.3 million, (70 percent) for the county of Santa Barbara to construct a new jail in North County. Due to the recession, cost of construction will be hard to acquire, however, the Santa Barbara County already owns the land where they want to place the jail.

Even with overcrowding issues, other obstacles are still preventing Sheriff Brown from getting his new jail built. A $15 to $17 million annual budget is required for the operation of the jail, and while the state has already issued a generous amount, there is still $23.7 million needed to build the jail itself. In 2000, voters opposed the building of this new jail with a ballot total consisting of a two-to-one measure, under a lower proposed building cost.

This past Tuesday, Sheriff Brown proposed Read more »

New $74-Million LAPD Jail Remains Locked

Written by 888BailBond Bondsman on June 22, 2010 – 7:48 am -

The Los Angeles Police Department’s new Metropolitan Detention Center is set to replace the failing 60 year old Parker Center Jail, but the budget crisis continues to prevent the new jail from opening.

Greg Rynerson Bail Bonds continues with our “Inside the Jail” series this week: Inside the New LAPD Metro Center Jail. Here you will learn:

  • The costs and reasons for a new jail.
  • Problems at the current Parker Center jail.
  • The jail layout and purposes.
  • Staffing considerations.
  • The benefits of the new jail and the down side.

The $74 million jail is state-of-the-art, but the staffing needs and the city hiring moratorium keep the bars shut. Will Los Angeles make an exception and allow hiring of new jail staff? Or, will there be a major crisis at Parker Center?

If there’s a jail you’d like to “go inside,” let us know and we’ll add it to our series.

Is DUI Becoming American Pie?

Written by Tonya Rynerson on June 18, 2010 – 7:19 am -

How many celebrity DUIs does it take to make an American pie? Well Chris Klein, best known for his “apple cheeked” role in American Pie, is the latest report of celebs arrested for driving under the influence. I know it’s not just the celebrities, but the repeated incidents of famous people drinking and driving seems to be a sad commentary on the publics attitude about this very dangerous activity.

Klein was arrested on June 16th just after 3:15 AM on an alleged DUI.  He was driving on the 101 Freeway with his dog. He was later bailed out of the Van Nuys Jail. It’s reported his blood alcohol level was just about 3 times legal limit in California, which is .08 percent.

If found guilty this time, Chris could be facing a minimum of four days behind bars. He was also arrested in 2004, where he was charged with two counts of DUI. He pleaded guilty and was fined $1,800 and performed community service.

With new laws that take effect this year in July, a multiple DUI offender may Read more »

Written by Robin Sandoval-March on June 18, 2010 – 6:39 am -

A new rule has been put into place that will keep taxpayers from having to foot the bill for those jailed in Glendale. The Glendale Police Department has begun charging a $135 fee to each defendant booked into the Glendale jail.

Officials state this new fine will help the city recover thousands in administrative costs. According to a Police report, the court will impose the fine as part of the civil judgement, and as a condition of their probation. The city reports that the money can help with purchasing fingerprint equipment, storage, photographs and other administrative costs.

Glendale has been charging this fee to those convicted of Driving Under the Influence (DUI) since 1997 and has collected about $31,000 in fees. With the expanded fee, the city could Read more »

Missouri Woman Jumps Bail and Heads to Santa Cruz

Written by 888BailBond Bondsman on June 15, 2010 – 4:01 pm -

SANTA CRUZ, CA – A female fugitive from Missouri is possibly on the run in Santa Cruz according to her bail bonds company. The Santa Cruz police received a large packet pertaining to the fugitive, Willow “Trudy” Holland who is suspected to be using homeless shelters and churches offering free meals as a hiding place.

According to her bail bondswoman, Lisa Henneberry in Missouri, she jumped bail last March and has since been on the run. Henneberry conveyed that Holland is dangerous.

Zach Friend, a Santa Cruz police spokesman, said it’s very rare that an out-of-state fugitive with a rap sheet like Holland’s would ever be searched for. Holland has had several traffic violations, and a theft charge, but no indications or record of a violent crime. This is the case with many fugitives and what makes bail bondsmen so valuable to the community as a whole.

Man Receives 9 Years for Jail “Drive-Through”

Written by Robin Sandoval-March on June 9, 2010 – 9:14 am -

Being drunk and driving is never a good thing. But being drunk and driving your Mercedes directly through the gates of a jail, well that’s down right ridiculous.

Calling on one, Matthew Van McDaniel. This young man from Los Alamitos actually did such a thing. On January 10th, he lost control and crashed his S550 directly through the gates of the James Musick Correctional Facility in Irvine. When a deputy there tried to restrain him, he actually punched the man breaking his nose.

Jim Armormino, a Sheriff’s spokesperson claimed it was “the first time somebody tried to break into the jail.”

Now, Mr. McDaniel Read more »
