August 12, 2010
Escondido, California officials proposed a plan Tuesday to transform their old police station into a place for initiating new technology companies, with the intention of attracting higher paying jobs and high-tech businesses.
Escondido’s median income is the lowest of the nine cities in North County San Diego, thus by creating a place for small business startups; it could help increase the city’s income as well as their longtime want of having a technology park, according to Mayor Lori Holt Pfeiler.
According to Dick Daniels, a City Councilman, housing startup businesses at this facility would generate a strong signal towards bigger technology firms with intentions of expanding their business. Companies that are interested in moving into the old police building would be given financially pleasing leases as an incentive.
In recent years, the city has rejected numerous proposals attempting to redevelop the old police station site, which is no longer in use by the Escondido Police Department, conveying that the proposals weren’t aggressive.
City officials revealed that the old police station does have some leaks in the roofing and an old ventilation system however, government grants do exist for these purposes.Three or four businesses have expressed willing to participate in this plan. The site could be in full bloom by the end of the year.
