San Mateo Jail Under Partial Quarantine
February 16, 2012A possible case of mumps has led to the partial quarantine of some inmates in the Maguire Detention Facility, the San Mateo County jail, when one of them became ill on Tuesday, according to a county health official. On Tuesday morning, one inmate went to the doctor with flu-like symptoms. The doctor said that there was a chance it was mumps and collected a specimen for testing by state health officials.
Robyn Thaw, spokeswoman for the San Mateo County Health System said, “We are not reporting this as an outbreak or even a confirmed case of mumps a this time.”
While the results are pending, some of the third-floor inmates in the Maguire Correctional Facility will remain in quarantine, according to Sheriff’s Lt. Larry Schumaker. Thaw believes that the results could come back by the end of the day today.
Quarantined inmates are not permitted to use the common areas or leave the facility for any reason, including court. Visitations have also been cancelled for those inmates. According to Chief Deputy DA Steve Wagstaffe, this mumps scare has impacted the court proceedings for seven felony cases- six pretrial hearings and a jury trial. The jury trial inmate has been cleared for court, though, while the other six will need to be rescheduled.

You know. I can’t remember that last time I heard of somebody getting the mumps. That I know what the mumps are probably says something about how old I am.

That, what I thought, Jeff! “Mumps? Big red, sore in the jowl area mumps?” I have to guess that when you look at California’s jails, you are finding inmates from around the world who possibly did have the advantages of vaccines.
