The President of the Professional Bail Agents of the United States (PBUS) has named this year’s Individual of the Year. The 2014 honoree, it seems, is a true hero and pillar of the community.
Gerald Madrid never set out to be a hero. On this particular Sunday he went to church, just like he had each week in the past. No one ever thinks a tragic event will happen at a place of worship, but during this particular mass, it did.
At some point during the service the choir began to sing a hymn. That’s when a parishioner jumped from his seat, ran toward the choir and started stabbing people. Although there were a great many people who ran for safety, Gerald ran toward the attacker without a second thought.
That’s when the attacker turned his sights on him. Gerald was stabbed multiple times in the back and once near the neck, and the blade of the knife is said to have narrowly missed his kidneys and spine. He said running toward the attacker was instinctual- he saw what was happening and he just rushed the guy.
The PBUS has said they are proud to honor this man who is truly a hero to his community, his family and the bail bonds profession.
