The smart ones don’t get caught.
A man who was wanted in connection with a July 18 assault was arrested after he contacted police to complain about his mugshot.
The photo was posted to the South Wales Police Department Facebook page, Newser reports; police were hoping someone would recognize him.
They never expected the suspect, 35-year-old Wayne Esmonde, would contact them himself!
“I am him,” Esmonde wrote in a post. “Not a very flattering mugshot. I’d appreciate if you’d take this post down. Innocent until proven guilty and all that.”
He also turned himself in the following day so police could take a better one. It would seem that Esmonde finally got his wish—police did take his mugshot down after he was in custody—but the story was so unusual that it’s gone completely viral.
His “bad mugshot” has since been shared on news websites throughout the world.
Esmonde isn’t the only suspect who has complained about a mugshot. In January, a New Jersey man bought hundreds of copies of his hometown newspaper to keep people from seeing his.
