If someone you care for has been arrested during the Labor Day weekend holiday, you’ll want to do your best to remain calm. Yes, this can be a very stressful situation but you’ll want to keep the following things in mind:
First, remember that all outbound calls from the jail are recorded. You’ll want to get as much basic information as you can about the arrest, including when, where, what jail the defendant is at, what they are being charged with and how much their bail is. Do not ask them to provide any details about the circumstances of the arrest. Anything that is said on an outbound call from the jail can and will be used against the defendant when they go to court.
Second, ask the defendant if they need you to call them off work or if they have children that need to be picked up. Assure them you’ll do everything you can to make sure they will get out of jail fast.
Lastly, you’ll want to contact a bondsman as soon as you learn of the arrest. The bondsman will help you understand how bail works and the information you’ll need to provide to complete a bail bonds application.
