PALM SPRINGS — Here’s an example of a good deed gone bad. Actor, Jeremy London, best known for his roles in “7th Heaven” and “Party of Five” was approached by several men as he worked on fixing his flat tire. Apparently, in exchange for the help, Jeremy offered one of them a ride home.

That’s when the actor noticed a change of character. The Palm Springs Police report that one of the men held him at gunpoint and forced him to drive around the city, making occasional stops to buy alcohol and use illicit drugs.

London was able to escape his vehicle unscathed, however, the kidnapper stole his vehicle. He reported the kidnapping and vehicle theft to police at around 2:30 a.m. on Friday.

Fortunately, Police were able apprehend the main suspect, Brandon Adams, 26, of Palm Springs. He was charged with kidnapping, robbery, possession of stolen property and vehicular theft.

Now, the suspect will be having a “party for one” inside of a jail cell.

440 pounds of heroin – that’s about the weight of a full grown black bear. Yet Jose Antonio Medina Arreguin, aka ‘Don Pepe,’ has been alegedly able to smuggle one bear-sized shipment of heroin per month into California. Arreguin reportedly did so by driving it across the Tijuana border into San Diego.

Mexican narcotics officers say Arreguin’s operation netted him $144 million a year. They were finally able to arrest the kingpin’s arrest in an attempt to take out the drug market there, after a two year investigation into his dealings,

Ventura County authorities now want to extradite Arreguin from Mexico, for trial.

At a news conference, Ventura County Dististrict Attorney Greg Totten said the King of Heroin’s arrest has “dramatically weakened perhaps the largest drug operation” in the county’s history. Although much of the investigation focused on Arreguin’s drug sales in Oxnard, his activities could be traced all the way from San Diego up to San Jose, officials said.

Totten also said Arreguin operated under the auspices of La Familia, a drug cartel that controls the western state of Michoacan. However, narcotics officers could not link him to the escalating wave of deadly violence that has plagued Mexico as a result.

Arreguin’s capture began with the drug bust of two lower-ranking men. Ventura County Sheriff Deputies, DEA agents, and officers from Oxnard and Downey teamed up to trace the heroin back to Don Pepe in Michoacan. Then their Mexican counterparts found and arrested Arreguin after being asked to do so by the U.S. Department of Justice.

Arreguin, who is looking at a U.S. prison term of 29 years, must be extradited to this country first, but how long that will take is a matter of speculation.

The Ventura Sheriff, Bob Brooks indicated bringing him to a Ventura jail and trying him in a local court would not pose a security problem.

A second Richmond teen has been arrested for his suspected role in a shooting spree that occurred inside a local church, last week. On Saturday night, a Richmond Police officer took the 16-year-old youth into custody on Barrett Avenue during a routine stop. Detectives had issued a warrant for him, and he is now being held at the Richmond Juvenile Hall. Juveniles are not eligible for bail bonds as adults would be. Generally, they are either released to their parents or held at a juvenile detention facility.

Another teen, 15, arrested in connection with the shooting but who was not formally charged by Contra Costa County prosecutors, has been set free. Authorities continue to look for more suspects who are being sought for conspiracy to commit a crime. The 15-year-old could still be charged later.

Due to their age, neither of these suspects’ names can be released. A 3rd suspect has also eluded capture. Police do not as yet have a motive or even a theory as to why this shooting took place.

The LAPD may have launched the future of crime fighting when they recently cracked the case of alleged kidnapper, Daniel Merino, AKA the “spiky-hair suspect.”

By using the latest in high-tech policing methods, detectives on the case implemented the use of enhanced video from a security camera to determine the make, model, color and year of the suspects car. The new high-tech camera device installed on a police car can detect and read every license plate it sees. This played an integral part in solving the case, along with the intelligent use of it by detectives.

Robbery-Homicide Division Detectives staked out an area the suspect was known to frequent. On Friday, they saw Merino getting into his car and driving into a parking garage. He was taken into custody.

They later found evidence which connected him to four separate attacks. Merino targeted young girls who were alone, drawing them into apartment buildings. His latest attempt occured in November of 2009.

Merino is being held in lieu of a $4 million bail. The two-year manhunt led by the LAPD has finally come to an end with his arrest.

What’s next in the future of crime fighting by use of high-tech methods? I can’t wait to find out.

A Fresno County jail correctional officer who she explains has been charged and jailed for embezzlement. Alfonso Alanis, 28 was arrested by Fresno County Sheriff’s detectives at approximately 8:20 a.m. on Tuesday. His bail was set at $50,000.

The drama unfolded and investigations were launched around two weeks ago, when detectives were made aware of personal property that was coming up missing from inmates at the jail.

The arrest was made at his home after detectives served a search warrant looking for stolen property. Accused of withholding (stealing) cash and other property from inmates, Alanis himself was booked into the jail.

Alanis has worked as a correctional officer since March of ’05. His job responsibilities included handling the release of jail inmates. It also included handling the property of several inmates from three separate county jails.

Alanis was released on bail later the same day.

OAKLAND, CA — 126 people have been issued felony arrest warrants which have lead to the recovery of over 12 pounds of cocaine, two pounds of methamphetamine, two pounds of marijuana and seven firearms. The drug sweep began early Monday.

The goal was to clean up the street-level drug dealers and keep the narcotics off the streets. Oakland Police Chief Anthony Batts said ultimately, officials will aim for the “big fish,” but first have to identify any key players. Batts also stated, “I’ve asked the Oakland PD to focus on drugs, guns and gangs in order to save lives.”

On Monday, 120 police officers went in search for 101 known and wanted dealers. The results came in at 42 arrests of some of those targeted. Additionally, 30 more were arrested on suspicion of either narcotics or firearm possession, violation of parole and other warrants.

Those who participate in the world of drug dealing may take precursory measures by giving incorrect identification, false addresses, court records or false paperwork to the DMV. Officer Scott Seder stated, “They know they’ll be sought out by law enforcement at some point… getting correct addresses is only one of many challenges in policing the drug trade.”

He further explained, “A narcotic transaction us usually done in under three seconds. I t can look like a brief two-hand handshake. So to get a really good, solid case for sales, you have to get someone selling to a cop.”

Moving forward, police plan to continue their sweep by issuing further search warrants and getting the rest of the accused drug dealers permanently off the streets of Oakland.

On October 23, 2009, Damon Nicholson, 41, a catering manager at the Hotel Laguna, was killed during a home robbery in Laguna Beach, California. According to police, the victim knew at least one of the men who killed him.

On December 4, 2009, his second attacker, Jacob Quintanilla, 20, was arrested by the Laguna Beach Police Department. He has been booked on suspicion of murder. Police say Quintanilla was allegedly present while Matthew Dragna, 19, perpetrated the crime. The duo then robbed the man’s home, taking everything of value they could find, including a laptop computer, clothing and a phone.

Nicholson was discovered by a co-worker who dropped by his home to check up on him and found his body. Dragna was taken into custody at a drug rehabilitation center this past November and initially taken to the Laguna Beach jail, but was transferred after not being bailed out to the Orange County Jail. Apparently Nicholson had met him on a website and befriended him. Damon Nicholson was a popular, longtime Laguna Beach resident.

A BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) Police Officer, who’s name has not been released, was injured by shards of falling glass Saturday at the West Oakland BART station. The laceration injury to his head and face occured during the arrest of 37-year-old, Michael Joseph Gibson, a San Leandro man who was claimed to have been shouting at other riders – and the entire incident was caught on tape.

The video, which was uploaded to YouTube, shows the officer entering the train and grabbing Gibson. He then lead him to the opposite side of the platform. The YouTube video, which was titled to suggest the officer forced Gibson’s head into the glass, actually appeared to show Gibson throwing his right arm forward right before the glass shattered.

Gibson, who’s had a history of mental problems was also injured in the arrest and taken to a hospital. He was later transported to the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin on battery and resisting an officer, both of which are felonies. He was also charged with the misdemeanor of being intoxicated in public.

The arresting officer has not been involved in any prior use-of-force incidents and is currently on leave as his injuries heal.

This latest incident does not come without controversy. Just in January, another BART officer was video taped after fatally shooting passenger, Oscar Grant III who was reported to be unarmed. That incident also sparked protests after being uploaded on to YouTube.

Police reported having “detected signs and symptons” of her being under the influence. She was given a breathalyzer test and charged with a misdemeanor DUI at the LAPD Hollywood Station.
