According to San Diego Police officers, they arrested Naanee because they could smell a “strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on or about his breath or person.” After several attempts to get Naanee to take another route, officers attempted to arrest him and Naanee resisted. Police proceeded by using pepper spray on Naanee, and he continued to resist.

Who Gets Arrested?

People often ask about the type of person that needs to call a bail bond company. I assure them it could be anyone: students, lawyers, white-collar, blue-collar, celebrities, even mayors get arrested. As a bondsman, we hear the sad stories of people who are in situations they never could have imaged almost every day.

Such is the case with San Gabriel Mayor Albert Huang who this week resigned from office under allegations of battery, assualt and robbery. A mayor? What happened? We don’t know, exactly.

To onlookers, Huang seemed to almost be in tears. The second Asian American to serve on San Gabriel’s City Council informed the public on Tuesday that he would no longer serve as Mayor due to bad press he and his family was receiving since his arrest on Friday.

Huang said, “When I saw someone had posted a picture of my daughter on the Internet, it is when a line has been crossed,” he added in Chinese, “I don’t want my family to be hurt anymore. I will sacrifice anything to protect them.”

Betty Mui, the wife of Huang’s deceased mentor, Chi Mui, spoke on his behalf. “I know Albert,” Mui said, “Albert did a lot to accomplish what Chi left behind. This is a great loss to the community.”

According to San Gabriel Police, Huang and his female companion at a restaurant fought over her purse. Then he tried to drive off with it, first in her car, then in his. She wouldn’t let him go and perched on the running board of his SUV, hanging on as he sped off.

At this time, Huang has not been formally charged but rather put under suspicion of these activities that occurred inside and out of the New Taste Dumpling House. Huang was released Friday on $100,000 bail and since then the Chinese media has been all over his felony charge involving the altercation between a woman and Huang.

Huang’s attorney, Daniel Deng said, “It’s a private matter that has nothing to do with his capacity as mayor; he wants to prove his innocence in court.”

Being arrested and needing a bail bond can happen to anyone, and when they least expect it. Everyone needs to be reminded that the family, victim, defendant and those who are around them are living out a very sad and stressful time in their lives. Even the Mayor is not immune to being arrested, and most people do not expect to find themselves in a situation like this.

What’s up with the Hills and DUI’s? Last October, we reported on the DUI arrest of Jason Whaler. In the same month, Stephanie Pratt also made headlines with her Van Nuys DUI arrest.

Jason Wahler former realty star was reportedly arrested a sixth time for drunk driving by the Newport Beach Police Department, last Friday evening. The reality star was stopped and handcuffed by police around 11:00 p.m. on March 20, 2010, but he was released without bail on his own recognizance (“O.R.”) hours later. While an “O.R.” is common for driving under the influence, more often repeat offenders will need bail.

Wahler is no stranger to skirmishes with the law. Last week, in Cabo San Lucas Mexico, he allegedly started a fight in a nightclub and was led out of the establishment by Mexican Police on March 11. Video of the incident has since surfaced on YouTube. Jason was released seven hours after being locked up.

Wahler has attended rehab and he openly admits to having a problem. Just hours after being released from custody, the Beverly Hills bad boy made a statement about his most recent arrest on Twitter. “Thank you for your support,” he tweeted. “But please respect my privacy as this is a personal matter: no need to bombard my parents with phone calls 24/7!“

They can catch flying projectiles in a split second, run faster than lightening, jump higher than a house, hit impossible targets, throw farther than anyone should – and for all of that, they are duly paid a king’s ransom.

But for all their prowess, fame and fortune, more and more sports celebrities are catching more and more of those name and game stealing DUI’s. That’s right. Arrested for driving while under the influence of alcohol. Is it the stress or strain of being under the public eye? Is it the constant pressure to perform? Let’s take a closer look at a few recent sport celebrity DUI arrests.

First up, basketball phenom and six-year NBA veteran, Al Jefferson of the Minnesota Timberwolves. He issued a statement of apology on Sunday after his DUI arrest. He was taken to the Hennepin County jail on the charge and later released. This deed caught him a two-game suspension which equates to approximately $292,682 of the $12 million he makes in one season. He’ll also have to be in court on April 23rd. But the money wasn’t the first thing on his mind. He later stated, “I want to apologize to the entire Timberwolves organization… and Wolves fans everywhere for my actions.”

Next up to the plate, David Freese of The St. Louis Cardinals. He was arrested in December on a DUI charge in St. Louis with a blood-alcohol level of 0.13. This level is nearly 3 times the legal limit of 0.08 in Missouri. Team officials are pleased with the way he handled the arrest, however. General manager, John Mozeliak stated, “I made sure he understood dealing with the alcohol problem and dealing with the legal side was more important than baseball.” Freese was entered into the team employee assistance program. He later told fans and officials, “It was poor judgement on my part… But God puts things in front of you for a reason. I’ve definitely learned from it…”

Bases are loaded, let’s round things out with Oakland A’s right hand pitcher, Clayton Mortenson. He was arrested the morning of Oct. 4th for suspicion of DUI. He had just joined the A’s rotation in September. Ready and eager to restore his squeaky clean image at the final A’s season game, he got in front of the press to issue what was reportedly an emotional apology. He said he couldn’t wait to report to camp this spring. Mortenson’s manager, Bob Geren said, “He made a mistake.” Geren stated he considers what happened, (the DUI), in the past and that it wouldn’t factor into how the player was evaluated. Mortenson stated, “It’s a fresh start… Last year was not a great way to end.”

So what is it? Can we really say why these sports stars have ended up behind bars for DUI? In economic times like these, some folks question that when someone has so much money and fame, why would they want to throw it all away? In the post Tiger example of lost endorsements that were perhaps worth millions and millions, the answer (or excuse) may always turn out to be the same – ”Because we’re only human after all.”

They’ve Got A Ticket To Ride…

Hey, when you’ve made it big time in show biz, sometimes it just takes a quick ride down to the local bank to withdraw any sum of money you need; for any reasonable reason or item.

Uh, I guess it also takes celebrity status be jailed, and while still in custody, have a sheriff personally drive you to the bank to withdraw your bail money.

As in the case of Rancy Quaid and his wife, Evi. After spending a few hours in a Marfa, West Texas County jail, a Presidio County Sheriff decided he’d give them a lift to retrieve their bail money. The reasonable thing to do indeed. Although it was said the celebrity was given no special treatment, the Sheriff also stated, “I like to help everybody out. It’s a small town.”

The two Quaids were arrested Thursday afternoon on a felony warrant for defrauding an inkeeper and burglary. Seems they “skipped out” on a bill of more than $10 grand at a hotel in Santa Barbara.

The two spent several hours behind bars before their release, their bail amount was $20,000 each. Independence Day!
