With the city facing a major budget crisis, making any improvements to any of Los Angeles Police Department’s facilities seems nearly impossible. But thanks to nearly a dozen volunteers, the LAPD Foothill Station in Pacoima will be seeing some much-needed renovations.

The Foothill Station including a jail has been in use for nearly fifty years and it shows. The seats in the station’s lobby are peeling or stained; officers are stuck using desk chairs that are too short; and the green paint on the walls is a depressing shade of green.

Vicki Burch, a regular volunteer in the Sun Valley area and co-chair for Foothill’s Community Police Advisory Board, took charge of asking local businesses to donate items and assist with making improvements to the station.

“A nice place to work makes your workforce more productive,” said Burch. She also hopes that the station will have new furnishings and new landscaping before the city celebrates the station’s 50th anniversary this year. “I want this area to look good, be good, and be a productive area. I don’t want to live in Slumville, USA.”

Around twenty businesses have provided construction workers and electricians for the renovations and donated items like a granite countertop, flat-screen monitors and desks. Even though there is still much that needs to be done for the station, officers are already grateful for the improvements that have been done.

“It’s really a labor of love,” said the station’s commanding officer Captain Joseph Hiltner. “We really have a community that appreciates their police department and folks that are donating recognize the fact that under fiscal constraints, we couldn’t do it without their help. And the officers appreciate it too.“

It was then, that an air support unit made a call out for more assistance.

The department stated, “It has come to the attention of the department that an Internet video shows at least a portion of the encounter between LAPD offers and those attending the party. In the video, officers are shown in the skirmish line formation.”

After the party smoke cleared, complaints of the officers using ‘excessive force’ were reported to the Foothill Division, according to officials.
