Walmart Child Slapper Held Without Bail

Written by Tonya Rynerson on September 3, 2009 – 4:52 pm -

Ok, I’ve gotta comment on this story because I can relate to it on so many different levels: parent, bail bondsman, Walmart shopper, on-looker… but first the story:

child cryingA 61-year-old Georgia man named Roger Stephens was held without bail yesterday for slapping a two-year old child at Walmart. Stephens was upset that the child was crying. He warned the mother, Sonya Matthews, that he would “shut that baby up” if Matthews couldn’t stop her daughter’s cries by herself.

When the child continued to cry, Stephens followed through on his threat. He slapped the 2-year-old Paige Matthews “across the face approximately four or five times,” according to the Gwinnett County Police Department report. Of course, the child screamed and cried even more after being assaulted, but Stephens said to the mother, “See, I told you I would shut her up.” He was arrested for felony cruelty to children and held without bond at the Gwinnett County Detention Center.

Ok, so as a parent and a member of society: Read more »

Charged with going AWOL, Chris Parks proves it was all just a mix-up

At 27 years old, Chris Parks never expected to return from a trip to Central America with friends - only to be arrested. He didn’t know why he caught the attention of  Homeland Security officials, but he would soon find out. Going AWOL, is what they charged him with. He was thrown into the County jail in Charlotte, N.C. for one week, and that was only the beginning of his ordeal.

You Should Have A Bondsman on Speed Dial

Written by Greg Rynerson on July 8, 2009 – 2:00 pm -

Calling Bail BondsmanImagine you’re a criminal defense attorney and you receive a 3:00 AM call from an arrested client. “I’m in jail—get me out”, demands your client!  “But I’m not acquainted with a bail bondsman,” you humbly reply.   Your client responds, “You’re a criminal defense attorney–what do you mean you’re not acquainted with a bail bondsman! That’s like a dairy farmer who’s not acquainted with a veterinarian.”

If you’re an attorney, it makes sense to develop a close relationship with a professional bail bondsman. Ok, so maybe you’re not an attorney. You still might want to know a good bondsman. Here’re a few reasons why:

We All Need Help Sometimes

As a bail bondsman, my job is to help people get out of jail. It’s not my job to give advice. Sometimes, that’s hard to do. Today was a good example, the phone rang around 6:00 am, I looked at the caller i.d. before answering, as is my habit. “Global Tel Link“ - tells me it’s a call from a Los Angeles County Jail. “Bail Bonds, may I help you?” I answer.

The caller is a male who tells me that he is in the Van Nuys Jail. He immediately tells me that his bail $10,000, he had $3000 in cash when he was arrested and would like to pay for the $1000 bond fee himself with that money. Before I even ask the usual bail questions, my warning signals are twitching. He seems to know the bail bond process, he sounds young and he has a large sum of cash. Read more »

Dead But Not Gone

Following the Boss’s Orders Can Land You in Jail

When people hear that we’re in bail bonds, one of the first things they say is, “You must work with some interesting people.” Yes, we do work with interesting people, but probably not in the way that you would think. Most of our clients are regular people like you, your kids, or your grandparents. In this case, one of those regular people happened to discover a dead body. Of course, it’s not illegal to find a dead body. But it does become a criminal matter if you find one and wait several days before you call the police! Now, for the rest of the story… Read more »
