Man Dies After Being Tasered in Santa Rita Jail

An Oakland man who was hospitalized Monday has died after being shocked twice by Tasers while in custody at the Santa Rita Jail. Alameda County Sheriff spokesman, Sgt. J.D. Nelson stated that 50-year-old, Martin Harrison succumbed at approximately 5 a.m.

Health Workers Locked Out One Day After Protest

OAKLAND — On Tuesday, approximately 140 health care workers, who are members of the Service Employees International Union-United Healthcare Workers West, held a one day strike at the Santa Rita Jail and the North County jail in Oakland.

They were protesting against stagnant contract negotiations which stated that management wants its employees to pay for 30% of their own health care costs.

Shattered Glass During BART Arrest Leads To Santa Rita Jail & Investigations

A BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) Police Officer, who’s name has not been released, was injured by shards of falling glass Saturday at the West Oakland BART station. The laceration injury to his head and face occured during the arrest of 37-year-old, Michael Joseph Gibson, a San Leandro man who was claimed to have been shouting at other riders – and the entire incident was caught on tape.

The video, which was uploaded to YouTube, shows the officer entering the train and grabbing Gibson. He then lead him to the opposite side of the platform. The YouTube video, which was titled to suggest the officer forced Gibson’s head into the glass, actually appeared to show Gibson throwing his right arm forward right before the glass shattered.


 
     BART Police Commander Daniel Hartwig, stated, “At this pont we do not know exactly why the glass broke, and that will be a part of the investigation.”
