Los Angeles Police Department officers responding to domestic violence dispute that occurred around 4 a.m. in the 18500 block of Hatteras Street discovered a female victim with a gunshot wound. Her assailant then tried to shoot the officers five times around dawn, but no one was hit.

The man refused to come outside and a SWAT team was dispatched along with a negotiator. Officers also considered using tear gas to force the shooter out of hiding.

LAPD Chief Kirk Albanese later said that the police who negotiated the man’s surrender were aided by several of his relatives. “The (suspect’s) family contributed immensely,” He elaborated. “Despite the tremendous expertise of our people, it is amazing what will turn the key sometimes, so we are very appreciative. The last thing we want to use is force.”

The gunplay also led to street closures and the evacuation of hundreds of residents from both the assailant’s apartment building and nearby condominiums. Hundreds of locals waited behind police lines for hours to return home, many still wearing their pajamas.

Finally, after ten hours, the man surrendered. He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder without incident. The police never had to fire a single shot.
